Sodium Hypochlorite (NaClO)

Sodium Hypochlorite is the primary disinfectant used at the Albany Water Department. It is a clear, light yellow-green liquid with a strong chlorine odor.

  • Trade Name: Hypo, Bleach
  • Strength: Delivered at 15% available chlorine.
  • Specific Gravity: ~1.21 (Heavier than water).
  • pH: > 12 (Highly Alkaline/Caustic).

!!! danger "Safety Warning" NEVER mix Sodium Hypochlorite with acids (like fluoride or PAC). This reaction releases Chlorine Gas, which can be fatal.
